Description: Returning by ship to South America, a young girl escapes her elderly husband by swapping places with a girl committing suicide. She believes her new life will be that of an arranged marriage but finds it is in fact a trick to get her working in a brothel.

Very dark look at the Tango underground of 1920s Buenos Aires, in which the famous dance symbolizes the obsessive and strange passions of three people caught up in this forbidden world. Uneasy mixture of sex and violence. with a convincing central performance by D'Onofrio, togther with stunning production design and cinematography that more than compensate for the murky storytelling. Another little gem from the producer (David Weisman), screenwriter (Schrader), and author (Manuel Puig) of KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN.
